Curious and intelligent, the meerkat is a highly social animal, living in colonies averaging 20–30 members. They take turns standing guard while the others are playing or eating, and emit short barks to warn the group if predators are coming near. Habitat loss, particularly severe drought, is a concern that affects many species who share their home with meerkats. We are working to protect meerkats and other African species by: Creating the LIFE (Living in a Finite Environment) program to work with Namibian partner organizations to form over 50 communal conservancies on over 29 million acres.
