A solitary and nocturnal carnivorous mammal, the black-footed ferret is one of the most endangered mammals in North America. The species was nearly wiped out in the 20th century, due in large part to eradication efforts targeting prairie dogs and ground squirrels, its main source of food. Since 1987, approximately 5,800 kits (babies) have been produced through six captive breeding facilities in Canada and the United States. WWF-Canada is collaborating with partners to ensure a successful reintroduction of ferrets to the Canadian Prairies.
